Accurate measuring is the key to a clean-fitting zebra blind. Decide first whether you'll mount inside the window frame (inside mount) or on the wall above it (outside mount) — the measurements differ.
Inside mount (clean, recessed look):
- Measure the inside width of the window frame at the top, middle and bottom — use the narrowest width.
- Measure the inside height at the left, centre and right — use the shortest height.
- Measure the depth of the frame; zebra blinds need a minimum depth (often about 2") for an inside mount.
- Don't deduct anything — the manufacturer takes the deductions for the headrail clearance.
Outside mount (covers the opening, blocks more light):
- Measure the width of the area you want to cover — overlap the opening by at least 1–2" on each side for better light block.
- Measure the height from where the bracket will sit above the frame to where you want the bottom to finish.
- Record both to the nearest 1/16".
Tips. Use a metal tape. Measure every window — identical windows vary. Note any handles, cranks or obstructions that would hit the blind.
