Should you measure your own screens or have a professional do it? The right answer depends on your windows, your confidence and how many screens you need.
DIY measurement saves labour cost and puts you in control of the spec. It works well when your windows are a standard style, your old screen still fits (so you can copy it), and you're comfortable with a tape measure to 1/16". The risk is a wrong measurement — a screen built 1/8" off won't fit and you'll pay to remake it.
Professional measurement costs a service fee but eliminates rework. A pro handles tricky openings — out-of-square frames, multi-panel units, oversized doors and specialty mesh — and records every detail (channel width, corner style, hardware side) so the build is right the first time. Measurement pairs naturally with installation, so fit is guaranteed.
A simple rule of thumb:
- One or two simple windows, old screen available → DIY is usually fine
- Whole home, unusual shapes, sliding/patio doors, or large openings → professional
- Rental property or strata where access and fit matter → professional
The hybrid option. Measure and install yourself for the easy rooms; book a pro for the patio door and any oversized unit. Bloom Bug supports both — configure DIY online or book measure-and-install across the Lower Mainland.
