Best Bug Screen Mesh Types for BC Homes

Standard, no-see-um, pet, solar and ember-resistant mesh — each solves a different problem. Here's how to pick the right one for your home.

The mesh is the working part of any screen, and the right one depends on what you're keeping out — and what you want to let in.

Standard fibreglass mesh

The default for most homes. It stops houseflies, mosquitoes and wasps, lets plenty of air and light through, and is the most affordable. Best for typical BC windows where the main pest is the common mosquito.

No-see-um (fine) mesh

British Columbia's coastal no-see-ums and biting midges slip through standard mesh. A finer weave blocks them while still allowing airflow. If you live near water, marshland or forests on the North Shore or Vancouver Island, this is worth the small upgrade.

Pet-resistant mesh

Made from heavier vinyl-coated polyester, pet mesh resists claws and pushes. It's the answer for homes with cats or dogs that lean on or scratch screens — especially on patio doors and lower windows.

Solar / sun-control mesh

A denser weave cuts glare and heat gain, ideal for south- and west-facing windows that overheat in summer. It slightly reduces airflow and visibility but pays off in comfort and cooling costs.

Ember-resistant mesh

A stainless-steel mesh designed to block flying embers during wildfire season. Recommended for homes in BC's wildland-urban interface areas. See our ember-resistant screens guide for more.

Match the mesh to your biggest local nuisance and you'll notice the difference immediately.
